Candidates for Chin Implant Surgery
Men and women with a chin that is small or poorly-shaped are potential candidates for chin augmentation using an implant.
It must be noted that another option for increasing the projection of the chin is a sliding genioplasty. This is a more invasive procedure that Dr. Foulad does not perform, but is typically performed by Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons. If there is malocclusion of the teeth, undergoing orthognathic surgery by an oral surgeon may also be recommended.

Chin Implant Surgical Planning
An important step involving the chin implant process is first determining the proper implant. During your consultation, Dr. Foulad will review the various types of implants including sizes and shapes. Dr. Foulad often utilizes silastic (silicone) implants. These are solid, flexible implants that are highly inert and have had an excellent track record being used for numerous decades. They can also be easily carved to further customize the shape of the implant.
How Chin Implant Surgery is Performed
The chin implant procedure can be performed using local anesthesia with the patient awake or using IV sedation.
Dr. Foulad typically uses a small incision under the chin because it is his opinion that the implant has a greater risk of migrating upwards when placed through an incision from inside the mouth. In addition, the technique of using an incision through the mouth is more likely to disrupt the muscles of the chin. By placing the incision within the natural crease under the chin and meticulously suturing the incision at the end of the case, this incision often heals so well it is imperceptible.
Once the incision is made, the tissue is lifted off the bone of the chin to create space for the implant. Dr. Foulad takes his time to create a very precise and tight pocket for the implant to reduce the risk of the implant moving. After the implant is placed, several sutures are also used to further secure the implant in place. The incision is then carefully closed using small sutures.
Preparation for Undergoing the Chin Implant Surgery
In preparation for undergoing the chin implant procedure, we need to ensure that you are healthy and optimized for the procedure. Certain medications and supplements (such as those that increase the risk of bleeding) might have to be stopped a specific time period prior to the procedure. You will be provided more comprehensive pre-operative instructions specific to your individual case.

What to Expect After Chin Implant Surgery
You will be recommended to keep the incision under your chin moist with an ointment for approximately 1 week. The sutures will usually be removed around 5 to 6 days after your procedure.
Sleeping elevated for approximately 1 week and reducing salt intake will help with reducing swelling.
Typically, bruising and a significant amount of swelling resolves within 1 to 3 weeks after the procedure. However, it will take at least several months for the majority of healing to occur and swelling to resolve. For more details, refer to our post-operative care instructions.

Can fillers be used instead of a chin implant?
Like a chin implant, fillers can add projection and improve the contour of the chin. However, the types of filler usually recommended for the chin lose their effect over time. Thus, filler treatment will have to be repeated routinely to maintain the desired appearance. Fillers may be an excellent option for individuals who want to avoid surgery, desires a more temporary solution, or require minimal change.
Can silicone chin implants leak?
Unlike silicone breast implants that can rupture and leak, silicone chin implants are solid and do not have this risk.
Do silicone chin implants have to be replaced?
Silicone chin implants are expected to last a life time. However, the implant can be easily removed and replaced if needed. This would be unusual, but may be recommended if the patient desires a different size or shape implant, the implant has moved, there is an infection around the implant, or other rare potential issues.

I placed a Mittelman Pre Jowl chin implant (size small), which adds projection to the chin and also extends to the pre-jowl region. I also performed conservative micro-liposuction of the neck and jowls. In addition, the implant was meticulously placed in the proper position to achieve an ideal result. A Conform Extended Anatomical Chin implant (size medium) was used in this case. This chin implant extends to the pre-jowl region to help create a smooth transition from the chin to the jawline. The combination of chin augmentation and neck micro-liposuction has defined her jawline and improved her facial harmony, while maintaining her identity.
