How Erbium Non-Ablative Laser is Performed

We typically use a topical anesthetic cream to make the treatment comfortable. We apply the cream to your skin for approximately 1 hour, but you have the option to apply the cream prior to arrival. This is typically sufficient to reduce the discomfort associated with the treatment. This laser generates an array of high-precision microbeams that penetrate deep into the skin. They create micro-islands of treatment zones that are surrounded by untreated skin. By leaving the surrounding areas untreated, the skin is able to heal much faster and with less risk of complication. This advanced technique transforms old and damaged skin into healthier and more youthful appearing skin.

We generally recommend several treatments in order to achieve worthwhile improvement. Unlike ablative lasers (e.g. fractional CO2 laser), these treatments are much gentler on the skin. However, the results are not as drastic. A typical treatment regimen involves 3 to 5 sessions, spaced 3 to 6 weeks apart. The exact number of treatments is highly dependent on the skin condition you start with and what you would like to treat. Your skin tone and skin type must also be taken into consideration. Following your treatment, you will continue to see improvements for several more months. During this time new collagen will continue to develop.

How to Prepare for Erbium Non-Ablative Laser

It is important to avoid sun exposure for 1-3 months prior to your treatment. Depending on your case, you may also be recommended to stop certain skin care products, such as retinol, several days prior to your treatment.

What to Expect After Erbium Non-Ablative Laser

After the treatment, you may have some discomfort. It can feel similar to a sunburn sensation, which resolves over hours to days. The skin can have a red or pinkish tone, which usually resolves within several days. The skin may have mild swelling for several days. A grid-like pattern, bronzing, and flaking may also temporarily occur. Most individuals are comfortable returning to work the next day. However, this depends on the skin type and strength of treatment performed.

There aren't enough stars for this review to tell you how pleased I am with Dr Foulad, Chelsea and the staff. It was so worth the miles traveled to have my facelift, neck and brow lift. Their attentiveness from the consult all the way through to the aftercare has been amazing. He continues to check in with me 2 months later. His attention to detail and his warm and caring personality made this such an enjoyable experience. I could not believe there was minimal pain and you cannot even see where the stitches were. Dr. Foulad loves what he does and it shows. He is professional, knowledgeable, skilled, and dedicated to his patients. His "bed manners" are without equal.
